Air Conditioning Compressor Buying Guide
Paskutinį kartą atnaujinta: 2026 m. balandžio 24 d.
The air conditioning compressor is the pump that circulates refrigerant through the A/C system, compressing it from a low-pressure gas to a high-pressure liquid. A failed compressor results in no cold air from the vents. Replacement requires specialist equipment for refrigerant recovery and recharging.
A/C compressor failure symptoms
Compressor failures can be mechanical (seized), electrical (clutch or control valve), or due to refrigerant loss. Professional diagnosis is recommended.
- Air conditioning blows warm air only
- Loud clunking or rattling when the A/C is switched on
- A/C clutch does not engage when the system is activated
- Visible oil stains at the compressor shaft seal or hose connections
- A/C cycles on and off rapidly (short-cycling) from low refrigerant
Compressor replacement
Compressor replacement requires refrigerant recovery, system flushing, and recharging by a certified technician with the appropriate equipment.
- Refrigerant must be professionally recovered — venting to atmosphere is illegal
- Flush the system to remove debris from the failed compressor
- Replace the receiver/drier or accumulator when fitting a new compressor
- Add the correct amount of compressor oil to the new unit before installation

How long does an A/C compressor last?
A/C compressors typically last 8-15 years. Lack of use during winter can cause seal shrinkage and refrigerant leaks. Run the A/C for a few minutes every month, even in winter, to keep seals lubricated.
Can I replace the A/C compressor myself?
You can physically swap the compressor, but refrigerant recovery and recharging require specialist equipment and certification. It is illegal to vent refrigerant to the atmosphere.
Why does my A/C blow warm intermittently?
Low refrigerant causes the system to short-cycle (turn on and off rapidly). A small leak allows enough refrigerant out to trigger the low-pressure switch. A leak test and recharge are needed.
Do I need to replace the receiver/drier with the compressor?
Yes. The receiver/drier contains a desiccant that absorbs moisture. Once the system is opened, the desiccant saturates and must be replaced to protect the new compressor.
How much does an A/C compressor replacement cost?
The price of an air conditioning compressor depends on your exact vehicle and the brand you choose. Enter your registration above to see parts confirmed to fit, then compare prices from the brands we stock on this page. Free UK delivery on orders over £50.
