Clutch Release Bearing Buying Guide
Paskutinį kartą atnaujinta: 2026 m. balandžio 24 d.
The clutch release bearing (throwout bearing) is pressed against the pressure plate diaphragm spring when the clutch pedal is depressed, disengaging the clutch. A worn bearing produces a distinctive noise and can prevent full clutch disengagement. It should be replaced with every clutch change as a preventive measure.
Release bearing failure symptoms
Release bearing noise is the most common early symptom. The bearing spins at engine speed only when the clutch pedal is pressed.
- Whirring, chirping, or grinding noise that appears only when the clutch pedal is depressed
- Noise disappears when the pedal is released (bearing disengages from the pressure plate)
- Clutch pedal vibration or roughness felt through the pedal
- Difficulty selecting gears if the bearing seizes and prevents full disengagement
- Rattling at idle that stops when the pedal is lightly pressed (bearing just touching the spring)
Replacement advice
The release bearing is accessible only with the gearbox removed. It should always be replaced when doing a clutch change, regardless of condition.
- Always replace the bearing as part of a complete clutch kit
- Inspect the clutch fork and pivot for wear — these can cause incomplete disengagement
- Apply a thin film of high-temperature grease to the input shaft sleeve where the bearing slides
- Ensure the bearing slides freely on the gearbox input shaft sleeve before refitting the gearbox

What does a bad release bearing sound like?
A whirring, chirping, or grinding noise that appears only when the clutch pedal is pressed and disappears when released. The noise increases in pitch with engine speed.
Can I drive with a noisy release bearing?
A mildly noisy bearing can be driven on for a while, but it will deteriorate. If it seizes, you will be unable to disengage the clutch, making the vehicle undriveable.
Why replace the bearing with the clutch?
Accessing the bearing requires gearbox removal — the same labour as a clutch change. Replacing a worn bearing later means paying for gearbox removal twice.
What causes release bearing failure?
Riding the clutch pedal (resting your foot on the pedal while driving) keeps the bearing spinning against the pressure plate, causing premature wear.
How much does clutch release bearing replacement cost?
The price of a clutch release bearing depends on your exact vehicle and the brand you choose. Enter your registration above to see parts confirmed to fit, then compare prices from the brands we stock on this page. Free UK delivery on orders over £50.
