Door handle failure modes
Door handles fail from broken return springs, snapped operating cables or rods, cracked plastic bodies, and corroded pivot points.
- Handle feels loose or floppy and does not return to its resting position
- Door does not open even though the handle moves — broken cable or rod
- Cracked or broken handle body — common on plastic handles in cold weather
- Exterior handle lock barrel does not turn or is stiff
- Interior handle snaps where the plastic meets the pivot point
Handle replacement
Door handle replacement typically requires removing the door card (interior panel) to access the handle mechanism and disconnect the operating rod.
- Remove the door card carefully — clips are fragile and break easily
- Take photos of the cable or rod routing before disconnection
- Transfer the lock barrel to the new handle if it is not included
- Test the handle operation from both inside and outside before refitting the door card
