The handbrake cable (parking brake cable) connects the handbrake lever or electronic module to the rear brake calipers or shoes. A stretched, seized, or broken cable prevents the handbrake from holding the vehicle on inclines and is an MOT failure. Replacement restores reliable parking brake operation.
Signs of handbrake cable failure
Handbrake cables degrade through corrosion, stretching, and inner cable fraying. Vehicles in damp climates or those left standing for extended periods are particularly susceptible.
- Handbrake lever travels excessively before engaging
- Vehicle rolls on inclines despite the handbrake being fully applied
- Handbrake feels slack or has no resistance when pulled
- One rear wheel drags or locks — cable seized in the applied position
- MOT failure for insufficient parking brake efficiency
Cable replacement tips
Most vehicles have a central cable from the lever and two secondary cables running to each rear wheel. Identify which cable has failed before ordering.
- Check whether the fault is in the primary (lever-to-equaliser) or secondary (equaliser-to-wheel) cable
- Lubricate the new cable outer sleeve to prevent future seizure
- Adjust the cable tension after fitting so the handbrake engages within 3-5 clicks
- Test on an incline to confirm the vehicle holds securely

How many clicks should the handbrake be?
Most manufacturers specify 3-5 clicks of lever travel for full engagement. If it requires more, the cable needs adjusting or replacing.
Can a seized handbrake cable cause the brakes to drag?
Yes. If the cable inner seizes in the applied position, the rear brake will remain partially engaged, causing drag, heat, and accelerated wear.
Is a handbrake cable an MOT failure?
Yes. The parking brake must achieve a minimum efficiency of 16% of the vehicle's weight. A broken or excessively stretched cable will fail this test.
Can I adjust the handbrake instead of replacing the cable?
If the cable is stretched beyond its adjustment range, frayed, or corroded, adjustment alone will not fix the problem. Replacement is required.
How much does handbrake cable replacement cost?
The price of a handbrake cable depends on your exact vehicle and the brand you choose. Enter your registration above to see parts confirmed to fit, then compare prices from the brands we stock on this page. Free UK delivery on orders over £99.
