Tail lights provide rear visibility, brake indication, and reversing illumination. A damaged tail light is an MOT failure and a safety risk. Modern tail lights use LED arrays or combination bulbs within a sealed housing. At CarParts247 we stock tail lights from Hella, Magneti Marelli, and ULO.

Tail light faults and failures

The most common tail light failure is a blown bulb, but cracked housings, water ingress, and wiring faults can also affect function. LED tail lights rarely fail from bulb burnout but can develop segment failures.

  • Blown bulb — brake, tail, indicator, or reverse light not working
  • Cracked or broken lens from rear impact or thermal stress
  • Water inside the tail light housing causing bulb corrosion
  • LED segment failure — part of the light cluster dim or out
  • Fast-flashing indicator — usually a blown indicator bulb (or LED resistor issue)

Replacement and bulb types

Tail light replacement is usually straightforward — remove a few fasteners and disconnect the wiring plug. Always check bulb type before ordering as many vehicles use specific dual-filament or offset-pin bulbs.

  • Check whether your vehicle uses bulb-type or full LED tail lights before ordering
  • Replace the gasket or seal if the housing shows signs of moisture ingress
  • Test all bulb functions after fitting: tail, brake, indicator, reverse, fog
  • Use the correct wattage bulb — higher wattage can melt the lens or socket
  • LED replacement bulbs may need a CANbus resistor to prevent error warnings

Dažnai užduodami klausimai

Is a cracked tail light an MOT failure?

Yes. A cracked lens that shows white light to the rear or allows water to enter the housing is an MOT failure. Even a small crack can be flagged as an advisory.

Can I repair a cracked tail light?

Red lens repair tape is a temporary fix for minor cracks. For MOT purposes and long-term reliability, replacement is the correct solution.

Why does my indicator flash fast on one side?

A fast-flashing indicator almost always means a blown bulb on that side. Check all indicator bulbs — front, side, and rear. On LED retrofits, a CANbus resistor may be needed.

Are LED tail lights repairable?

In most cases, LED tail lights are replaced as a complete unit because the LEDs are soldered to the circuit board. Some specialists offer board-level repair for expensive OEM units.
