The window motor powers the electric window mechanism, raising and lowering the glass. A failed motor causes the window to operate slowly, intermittently, or not at all. Window motors contain a small DC motor and reduction gear set. Replacement restores smooth, reliable window operation.

Window motor failure symptoms

Window motors fail from worn brushes, seized gears, or burned-out armatures. Water ingress through deteriorated door seals accelerates failure.

  • Window moves very slowly compared to the other windows
  • Grinding or clicking noise when operating the window switch
  • Window operates intermittently — sometimes works, sometimes doesn't
  • Window does not move at all — no sound from the motor when the switch is pressed
  • Window drops into the door if the motor's internal gear strip fails

Motor replacement tips

Window motor replacement requires removing the door panel and disconnecting the motor from the window regulator mechanism.

  • Support the glass with tape before disconnecting the motor to prevent it dropping into the door
  • Check the window regulator for damage before fitting a new motor — a stiff regulator kills motors quickly
  • Apply white lithium grease to the regulator rails and channels
  • Test the new motor before reassembling the door panel

Dažnai užduodami klausimai

How do I know if the motor or regulator has failed?

If you hear the motor running but the glass does not move, the regulator mechanism or its connection to the motor has failed. If there is no sound at all, the motor, switch, or wiring is the problem.

Can I replace just the motor without the regulator?

On many vehicles, yes. The motor bolts to the regulator and can be replaced separately. On some designs, the motor and regulator are sold as one unit.

Why does my window work intermittently?

Worn motor brushes lose contact intermittently, especially in certain rotational positions. Corroded connectors and damaged wiring are also common causes of intermittent operation.

Can water damage the window motor?

Yes. Water enters the door through deteriorated seals and drainage holes. Corrosion attacks the motor brushes, commutator, and connector, causing failure.
